My Top Three $0 Tips for Getting It Together.
Updated: Jun 15
Getting your life together is a myth.
There is always one more thing you need, one more thing that has to be done, one more thing that’s gone wrong… As a personal victim of the “one more thing” spiral, let me tell you: accept defeat.
My weeping and empty bank account, my closet full of trendy clothes I don’t actually wear, my unused Pilates membership (goodNESS those are expensive), my car key fob cover (why do I even have one of those?)... all things that are a direct consequence of trying to keep up with the TikTok influencers of the day. And let me tell you, I feel absolutely no better about anything at this exact moment because I haven’t made any progress towards MY goals, but I’ve made progress towards… bankruptcy? I don’t actually know! It all feels very hamster-wheel-esque, doesn’t it?
There’s no keeping up with the Joneses these days… have you tried to buy milk lately? Sheesh.
So here’s my top three $0 tips for feeling more on top of things.
Become very clear on what isn’t working.
The whole mindset-reframing doesn’t happen overnight, and starting from a spot where you’re comfortable (i.e., listing everything that is wrong) tends to feel way more doable than the alternative.
2. Internalize what of that list is changeable and what isn’t.
We are aiming for the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. We cannot magically quit our soul-sucking job when we need the income, but we can start the habit of cleaning the kitchen at night. Looking at our list of things that aren’t working through this impartial lens will help you create a divide between what you can and can’t do.
3. Make a plan.
So you need to quit your soul sucking job– you can’t just walk in and slap down your two weeks without a plan. We need a plan. First up, you need a resume. Then you need to research and apply for new opportunities. Then you need to do interview prep… And so on. Understanding these steps and knowing you have a plan to move your life in the direction you decide can bring a peace that no amount of Stanley Cup accessories can.
BONUS TIP: Find your important documents. Right now. Where’s your passport? Your Social Security Card? Your Birth Certificate? You get the idea. Having these in a safe home can also up that feeling of security.
Now of course, this is just the springboard getting your ish together. The safety blanket to wrap yourself back into every time you feel like life is falling off track. To follow the previous example, you need a new job, but it’s been 9 months since you made the plan and your resume is half done and dusty? Easy peasy, just pick that sucker back up. There is no judgment of you in this method, just of the situation and a plan on how to make it better. And that’s what we’re all about here! I have total faith in you. Just take a deep breath and start again ☼
