Re-Building Your Morning
Updated: Jun 15
Let’s chat about morning routines! And why they never seem to work!
Morning Routines on the internet don’t ever seem to work because they are not yours.
I could sit here and tell you to wake up early and go for a run and then drink matcha all before 6am, and then you say “OKAY!” and go and try to do just that tomorrow, not manage to, and then feel like a failure because you don’t even LIKE matcha and what are you doing up at 5:00 in the morning anyways when you went to bed at 1am.
Routines will work when they are formatted around what you want and your goals. (And if your goals revolve around drinking matcha when you don’t like it, I’m honestly unsure how to help you).
Below is my guide to making a morning routine you’ll actually stick to:
Firstly, I need you to make a list of how you want to feel.
When I was planning out my morning routine, I had a thousand ideas of what the internet said it should include. I was ready to bring in movement, learning a new language, pilates, and goodness knows what else into my bright and early hours…
Except I hate mornings. I just wanted to stop feeling like I was rolling out of bed and immediately going to work.
So I made a list. On it, I put that I wanted to feel peaceful, unrushed, prepared, and like I had done something for myself before I went and cranked out a day for the Man™. This was my starting point.
Secondly, I want you to make a list of everything that needs to be done in the morning.
I knew how I wanted to feel, but that didn’t yeet out the need to walk the dog or feed the kids… so now we have to list out everything that needs to happen before we progress into our days.
Thirdly, it’s time to think of activities that can help you feel how you want to feel.
For me, it was doing the NYT daily puzzles while drinking my coffee at home still in my PJ’s, not checking news or emails (but TikTok is another story), and preparing my bag the night before.
Please note how none of these things are waking up at 5 (is it obvious that I hate waking up early yet?), any sort of cardio, cold plunges, etc. etc. etc. They are all things that feel tailored to me, and not like the outside world is pressing in on time I desperately wanted for myself.
Finally, put it all together!
Organize your need to do’s and your activities in a way that makes sense for your morning, and viola, you have a routine that is custom-built to you! If you need a little more guidance, you can snatch up our free worksheet below!
I hope this helps you get more out of your mornings, and you can spend your time tailored to what you need ☼
